Vera Slonim married Vladimir Nabokov, a promising writer whose poetry she adored, in Berlin in 1925. Both of them – a Jewish lawyer’s daughter and the son of a well-known Nabokov's winter poems are saturated in images of Véra, a slender shadow detaching itself from the velvety darkness, poised to explore the black magic of the Berlin streets. The world may have been falling apart around them, but the poetry is full of enchantment and rebirth, as eight months before it had been full of self-pity and despair. The world may have been falling apart around them, but the poetry is full of enchantment and rebirth, as eight months before it had been full of self-pity and despair. Throughout his career, Nabokov dedicated his books to his wife, who made them possible and could not bear a bad translation or anything else that might detract from her husband's public image. "In Vèra's outrage, I learned a great deal about her, including how deeply devoted she was to remaining in the shadows," said Schiff.

Som gift med författaren Vladimir Nabokov arbetade hon även som hans assistent och manager samt var en stor inspirationskälla till många av hans verk.
